Help! I need to find:
Should I use a database or a website...what's the difference?
Why is a database better for accurate information than Google or other Internet search engines? That's easy! ANYONE can put ANYTHING up on the web. Just because a search engine picks it up does not mean that the information is accurate. But a database, on the other hand, is a resource that the library purchases. So the information that you find there is reliable just like the information in a book or a periodical. In fact, the information that you find on a database IS a book, article, or periodical and NOT a website (even though you are reading it on the computer). This info also "counts"
as a book, article, or periodical, not a website, when you are citing your sources for a school project!
Click here to Search/Browse Student Databases by subject.
A list of ALL of WTPL's Databases are available listed by subject here or listed A to Z here.
Primary Sources
A primary source is a source that was created by someone who has (or had) firsthand knowledge or who was an eyewitness of an event.
Use the library databases to find primary pources for your assignment. Newspapers, magazines and more are available. Find a primary source here.
A periodical is a regular publication such as a newspaper, a magazine, a journal, etc. The library subscribes to many periodicals -- some are in print and some are online. You can access our online periodicals from home or in the library through our databases. Find a periodical here.
Search our catalog for books and media. If you need an item from another library you can put in a request and it will be sent here for you.
The catalog lets you make and save lists of items. There are also several new catalog features.
